What is the Best Christmas Song?
December 9, 2021
Now that the Christmas season is upon us, a question I have been frequently asked has been “what is your favorite Christmas song?” I tend to reply with some classics sung by Michael Buble like, White Christmas, or Holly Jolly Christmas. However, through these questions I became curious about what other people like to listen to around Christmas time, and if there is a “secret formula” to making a “best” Christmas song. So I decided to set off on a quest around the High to find out what other people’s favorite Christmas songs are and their reasons for why they like listening to them.
(The prompt I asked everyone was “What is your favorite Christmas song and why?”)
Thomas Beshke and Jarret Johnson both said they find themselves listening to Jingle Bells a lot because it has a very snappy tune and gets stuck in their head.
Maybe the “best” Christmas song is about being repeatable and catchy?
Pierce Cooper loves Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John Lennon and Yoko Ono mainly because it’s by John Lennon and Yoko Ono who he both admires, but also because it has a message about the Vietnam War relating to Christmas.
John Campana said his favorite Christmas song is “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey because he is a big Mariah Carey fan.
Grady Cate also considers “All I Want For Christmas Is You” to be his favorite X-mas song because it’s an original tune and departs from the traditional 50’s style music very prevalent in the genre.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” is also Nathan Brown’s favorite song as “it is the only one I really know.”
Charlie Bruce (like me) is also a fan of Michael Buble Christmas songs, but I would even concede that he is a bigger fan as he likes “to listen to anything Buble.”
Jacob Monastra’s favorite Christmas song is “Do they know it’s Christmas” because it is sung by his go to band: Band Aid.
Maybe what constitutes the “best” Christmas song is who sings it and if they’re Mariah Carey?
David Ellis’ most liked song is “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” because of the lyrics and the feeling it creates inside of you.
Emilio Avina-Sanchez said his favorite song has got to be “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber because the lyrics are very Christmassy and send a romantic vibe that is fitting of a Christmas atmosphere.
Will Velthoven also likes “Mistletoe” because of the theme.
Maybe being the “best” Christmas song is about the lyrics and the vibe the song gives off?
Although the results of this investigation were very inconclusive, I will end it on a high note by reminding everyone that no matter what Christmas song is your favorite, you have to listen to at least one song by Michael Buble, and I guess “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey since that was the most popular one in this survey.
Have a Merry Christmas Cubs!
