After a disappointing 14-68 season, Pistons fans and players were not happy with the team’s performance. Star player Cade Cunningham was quoted mid-season, saying, “No way we are this bad”. Looking to forget the past, the Detroit Pistons are prepared for a fresh start in the 2024-2025 season. Towards the end of last season, the Pistons aimed to secure a top draft pick, putting little effort into most games, but unluckily they ended up with the 6th pick, which they used to draft Ron Holland from Overtime Elite. Holland is a versatile forward known for his defensive skills, finishing ability, and toughness. He is expected to have an immediate impact, whether starting or coming off the bench.
The Pistons made notable moves in free agency to support their rebuild. They brought back former Piston, Tobias Harris, who brings strong scoring ability and a breadth of experience. They also signed Tim Hardaway Jr., known for his shooting and scoring prowess, and Paul Reed, who brings defensive versatility and energy. These veteran additions are expected to provide a sense of leadership and help stabilize the team, silencing the critics who claim they are young, inexperienced, and unstable.
In addition to getting new players, the Pistons hired a new head coach, J.B. Bickerstaff. Last season, Bickerstaff coached the Eastern Conference 4th seed and Pistons division rival, Cleveland Cavaliers, who finished with a 48-34 record. Bickerstaff is known for his defensive-minded game plans and ability to develop young talent, which will be crucial in guiding the team’s growth. U of D student and Pistons fan Jonathan Tinsley feels great about the new hire, saying, “I think he is a really good coach because he can lead the team and have the right people on the court at the right time, and run the right plays.”
This season, the Pistons are focused on improving their defensive capabilities and finding more offensive consistency. The health and development of Cade Cunningham, who is returning from injury, will be paramount to the team’s success. Cunningham, along with Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, make up a promising young core that the Pistons hope will lead them back to playoff contention. With these changes, Detroit fans have reasons to be optimistic about a more competitive season.
