Meet Mr. Thomas Burns, a dedicated member of the Alumni Volunteer Corps (AVC) making a meaningful impact in the school community. With a passion for inspiring students, Burns brings a great knowledge and experience to the school environment as he serves as a role model for students.
Growing up in the East Side of Detroit, Michigan, Burns has made it a long way to where he is now. His path into education mainly started when he attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School. As Burns was a legacy student after his brother, he did not really have a choice whether he wanted to attend U of D or not. However, he enjoyed his time here and became extremely involved. Mr. Burns was a part of Model United Nations, Quiz Bowl, and the Lacrosse team. Geology with Mr. Schaefer was his favorite class and his most memorable one as well.
Graduating from U of D during COVID was Burns’s most memorable time in high school, as they were on the Backfield in July, burning hot, saying their last goodbyes to each other. He continued his educational journey attending Alma College, where he studied Political Science and Psychology. When asked what he liked about Alma, Burns emphasized that he particularly “liked the small class sizes, and knowing everyone I see on campus.” Alma shaped him into who he is today, and over time, Mr. Burns picked up the hobbies of reading, working out, and coaching Lacrosse. Dr. Gorton, a professor at Alma College who teaches Political Theory, is the best teacher he’s ever had. When asked why, Burns responded that “his classes were engaging, and he made boring topics very fun.”
As Burns continues his journey with the Alumni Volunteer Corps, his dedication to giving back to U of D shines through and gives him an opportunity to put his foot in the door of the real world while still being a part of high school. As he navigates the maze of life, he listens to his favorite rock band Blink 182. Although he hasn’t yet determined his career path, his commitment to connecting with students offers a valuable steppingstone for the future. In moments of reflection, he enjoys the comforting taste of pasta, reminiscent of cherished family dinners, and unwinds by watching his favorite Television Series, Succession. With a heart full of passion and a mind eager for growth, Thomas embodies the spirit of service and the pursuit of knowledge, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
