U of D Jesuit welcomes new staff in the ‘24-’25 school year; among them is Mr. Timothy McVean, one of two AVC’s for this year. A native of Berkley, Michigan, McVean attended Shrine High School for two years before transferring to the UDJ to finish his high school career. McVean was a three-sport athlete, playing varsity football, JV baseball, and basketball. He was also involved in Anime club, and says he is saddened that it is no longer around at U of D Jesuit.
When asked, “Why U of D Jesuit?” he answered that “UDJ provides a structure that most schools don’t. It was always good for me being a student here because there was structure, but also freedom.” While in high school, McVean’s favorite class was Ignatian Prayer and Meditation. When he attended, the class was taught by Father Ted Munz S.J. and Brother James Boynton S.J., current president. He noted how relaxing the class was, and how nice it was to start his day with that as opposed to any other class.
McVean attended Grand Valley State University where he studied communications and did some work in the radio industry. If he wasn’t a teacher, he could see himself continuing as a radio host or work for a sports team, even if it’s just ticket sales to start out and moving up through the ranks.
Outside of the classroom, he is an avid weightlifter and gamer, especially in sports games like Madden and 2K, reflective of his past as an athlete. McVean’s favorite food is pizza, and he credits this to his former employment at a pizza shop. “I worked at a Hungry Howie’s for like five years, and I could eat that every day, both because it’s free and it’s good.” Continuing on his love for anime, McVean’s favorite show is Naruto, “I’m on my third or fourth time watching it right now, but it’s like a thousand episodes. I love it though, because that show’s been with me forever.”
