The Catholic Church has revealed an unprecedented new mascot, an anime-inspired girl named ‘Luce.’ The anime-inspired cartoon mascot, wearing a raincoat with a rosary necklace and carrying a staff, has taken the online world by storm. ‘Luce’ was designed by Italian pop artist Simone Legno, who takes inspiration from street graffiti and Japanese art, as the official mascot for the 2025 Jubilee, an important year of celebration for the Church. The mascot has become the subject of memes and social media posts throughout online platforms, mainly on X (formerly Twitter). While some traditionalist Catholic accounts on the platform expressed anger and rejection at the mascot’s introduction, most Catholics on X were largely sympathetic and eager to promote the new ‘Luce’ character. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, organizer of next year’s jubilee, said the release of the character was inspired by the Church’s desire “to live even within the pop culture so beloved by our youth.”
