The International Criminal Court (ICC) as of yesterday, November 21st, has issued two arrest warrants, one for Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel, and Yoav Gallant, formerly Netanyahu’s Minister of Defense. The charges center around war
crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Palestinian people of Gaza under their leadership. The alleged crimes include starvation as a method of warfare through its blockade of humanitarian aid, murder, persecution, and other crimes against
humanity. What is less certain, however, is whether the two individuals will be detained for these crimes, as the ICC does not have its own police force and relies largely on compliant local authorities in 125 member-countries to carry out these arrests. Regarding said
countries who are signatories to the ICC’s founding treaty, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan has stated: “we count on their cooperation in this situation, as with all other situations… We also welcome collaboration with non-states parties in working towards accountability and upholding international law.
