Kairos CXVII: More Than Just a Retreat

Retreats are an essential part of the U of D experience, and many seniors and alumni will agree that the Kairos retreat is the most important. Kairos, which is the Greek word meaning “God’s Time,” is a four-day, senior retreat on which Cubs connect with both God and each other. The first Kairos of the 2021-2022 school year took place over the summer in June, marking the 117th retreat at the High, and the group that went can definitively say that it lived up to its reputation. When asked about the retreat, Kyle Cronan, ‘22, had this to say: “Kairos was a really eye-opening experience and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have gone!” His fellow classmate, Liam Flynn, said, “This retreat is a top-two experience at the High, and it ain’t number two.”

This Kairos was particularly unique because of its early date; members of both classes 21’ and ‘22 attended. This mixture of ages brought about some interesting perspectives and created some unlikely connections between Cubs. A typical Kairos retreat, however, is senior-led, and senior-oriented. Nevertheless, the retreat was just as impactful. Part of the allure of Kairos is the level of secrecy that comes along with it. Only a select few – apart from those who have attended a Kairos retreat – know what truly happens, and those who have attended are encouraged to refrain from sharing their stories, so that the experience can be just as impactful for future Cubs. However, without spoiling the retreat, here are a handful of students’ favorite parts of Kairos CXVII: Sam Giuliani, ‘22, remarked, “My favorite part of Kairos was how we all grew closer together.” Jack McManus, ‘22, said, “The Mass was my favorite part.”

Overall, this first Kairos was one for the books and a great way to start the 2021-2022 school year. A special thanks goes out to Dr. Gall, Mr. Rizik, Mr. Gregosian, and the Faith and Service Department for making this experience incredible. It is truly one to remember. Before you leave the halls at the High, make sure you go on a Kairos retreat!
