The U Of D Jesuit Robotics Club is by far one of the most successful clubs at the High, but it still hasn’t received the level of appreciation it deserves.
The robotics team at U Of D has traveled across the country for various tournaments over the years. Thus, in order to get insights on the RoboCub life, a member was asked about their experience, “The trips are really fun, probably too much”. This quote from a member of the team shows how not only are the Cubs experiencing high levels of success, but they’re also managing to have fun along their journey. Some of the tournaments that the RoboCubs travel across the country for are run through firstinspires.org, a group that is responsible for 80 million dollars in scholarships.
Students have created several incredible machines including a T-shirt cannon and other machines related to firstinspires. The robotics team has received award after award since 2015; the club has won the Creativity Award twice in the last six years. Robotics has also won the District Event Finalist Innovation in Control Award four times in the last five years. They’ve won their district in back-to-back years and have competed nationally multiple times. The club has amassed several notable sponsors including the likes of Ford, Solidworks, and SEG Automotive.
This year, the robotics team will compete at the 2023 World Championship after finishing in the top 15% out of 480 teams. Despite all of this success in the past, the team finds itself lacking depth and financial amenities compared to those it will compete against. Mr. Wong, the assistant coach expressed his thoughts on the team’s current situation saying, “This team prides itself on accomplishing a lot with limited resources. We have defeated many teams who have many times the members and budget”. This reality has allowed the team to create an environment that demands hard work, critical thinking, and good teamwork. These three things will be essential to the team’s success at the world championship, and building a better future for the club. The team’s mission is to build knowledge regarding STEM while simultaneously following the U Of D mission to be men for others. Men who Are Loving, religious, intellectually competent, open to growth, and committed to doing justice.
