To become a member of the Society of Jesus, candidates must complete a regency period, typically two to three years, as part of their formation following initial admission into the Society. When asked why he joined U of D Jesuit, he explained “this is in part my decision, but it’s mostly because Jesuits have a vow of obedience, his decision, which takes into account my own needs, the school’s needs.”
Mr. Nathan Cortas first became attracted to the society of Jesus through the writings of James Martin and Gerard Manly Hopkins. Cortas’s journey toward joining the Society of Jesus has been deeply shaped by his love for literature, music, and the meaningful relationships he’s built. His experiences in education, both as a student and as a teacher, display his passion for learning and community. As he continues his formation, Mr. Cortas remains committed to the Jesuit values guiding his path.
Graduating from the University of Kentucky in 2019 where he earned a degree in English and Music, Cortas pursued becoming an English teacher. Mr. Cortas spends his time outside of school playing the clarinet, and piano and even more recently playing square dance with Br. Boynton S.J.
Cortas explained, “My English teacher, Mr. Cooksey, introduced me to outstanding authors, like Gerard Hopkins.” He continues, “his interest in me as an individual and as someone also interested in English, he wanted to get to know us, and he was passionate about what he’s teaching.” Ultimately inspiring Cortas to become an English teacher.
Mr. Cortas elaborates on his experiences of being a band kid. “I was playing clarinet in the concert band, and saxophone in the jazz band, then I ended up becoming the treasurer of the senior class”. When Cortas is not teaching or square dancing, he is enjoying an episode of Joe Para Talks with You, a sitcom that aired on Adult Swim from 2018-2021.
