The once small soccer club that still currently shares a stadium with a high school has grown into a serious pro team on the soccer scene in the United Soccer League Championship. Detroit City Football Club is a pro soccer team that started from the bottom of the U.S pro soccer pyramid. Now, the club is thriving in the second highest league, only behind the Major Soccer League. Unfortunately, money is one of the only factors stopping them from reaching promotion. However, because of their strong network of supporters, grit, and skill DCFC continues to succeed in competing in the USL Championship.
Since the start of this season, DCFC has climbed all the way to fourth place in the eastern conference of the USL Championship. In this time, the squad has accumulated 37 points with ten wins, seven draws, and six losses. With some more wins in the remaining time, they can push towards being in the top two of the league. Standout players like their lead goal scorer, Darren Smith, will be crucial in their final stretch of this season. Smith has scored an impressive 12 out of the team’s 28 goals so far. If they are successful in climbing the table, they will be in a great spot going into the playoffs.
Additionally, not only is their field of play going well, but as a club they are improving. In the 2028 season, DCFC’s new stadium, AlumniFI, will be completed. In place of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital, the new stadium will hold many more fans and be a huge upgrade from the former Keyworth Stadium. This will help the team gain more well-deserved traction, and eventually reach the MLS. This long overdue improvement will help the club continually grow and rise in U.S soccer ranks.
Overall, DCFC is a team that may go unnoticed by many, but their future is certainly bright. Their gritty playstyle along with their new stadium coming makes them a great club. The soccer world needs to be ready for the upsets coming from DCFC.
