On February 3, the U of D Jesuit Student Senate will be hosting the inaugural Winter Ball at the school.
The week of February 3 is the U of D Jesuit Winter Spirit Week. The idea from the Student Senate is that the Winter Spirit Week will be very fun and creative themes, which lead up to the much anticipated “Fill the Bowl” basketball game on Friday. The week will finish off with the High’s first Winter Formal on Saturday. Fill the Bowl will be against the Central Catholic Irish, a basketball team in Toledo, Ohio, and the Cubs have never had a match up against them before. This is going to be the 10th anniversary of tradition of Fill the Bowl at the High. The goal of this event is to encourage the entire student body to attend and fill the lower bowl of the bleachers, screaming, cheering, and bringing as much school sprit as everyone can.
The U of D Student Senate has been hard at work making sure that the Winter Ball is the best it can be. Senate Treasurer Umair Ahmed, who has had a hand in creating, promoting, and setting up the event, feels a great sense of pride that he is a part of the Student Senate that created the Winter Ball, saying, “It feels great to know that I can make history at U of D by creating a formal that we never had before”.
As said previously, the dance on February 3 is the very first “Winter Ball’’. However, there have been multiple dances in the past, like the Icebreaker, an informal dance meant for younger students to get to know girls from other schools and their fellow Cubs. Unfortunately, the event was taken away after activities that were not appropriate. However, many felt that the taking away of the dance was unfair to students who did not participate in the wrongdoings. Lily Waldman, a former Mercy student and attendee of the Ice breaker dance, said in regard to the event, “I realized it was an isolated incident and I even went to multiple U of D dances after it”.
The High is committed to making this dance the best it can be. It will be very similar to the fall Homecoming dance, except the marquee game will be basketball instead of football. The dance will once again be held in the Commons. In years past, there have been complaints about the heat in the Commons. This will not be an issue for the Winter Ball, as “Mr. Hilden will open the windows”, according to Student Senate Treasurer Joseph Stachelek. This leaves many student leaders confident that the Winter Ball will be one of the best dances that U of D has ever had.
The inaugural Winter Ball admission price will be $20. The dance rules and regulations about what students and their dates will be able to wear will be the same as Homecoming. For any other questions about the dance, contact Mr. Hilden and the Student Senate.
