The World Athletic Championships in Budapest took place between August 19 through August 27 and what an exciting event it was. The new stars of track and field were born, legends were solidified, and times were exceptional! Let’s unload all the action starting with the one and only Noah Lyles. Lyles has been at the top of the world stage of sprinting for the last couple of years where he has won 2 gold medals at the Doha World Championships, a gold at the Eugene World Championships, and a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
This year Lyles came in on a mission, winning Gold in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. He is the first person to win all 3 since the great Usain Bolt, putting Lyles aside elite company. On the women’s side of the sprinting world, Sha ‘Carri Richardson found herself at the top of the 100m dash. Richardson has faced harsh criticism in the past couple of seasons due to not meeting the expectations of many, but she finally seems to be back in top form. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica dominated the 200m with a blistering time of 21.41 seconds. To put this into perspective the World record, which has stood for 35 years, is 21.34. Many believe that Jackson will break the world record later this season.
Distance did not disappoint, in the 1500m run, the favorite to win was Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway who, up until the race, had gone undefeated all season. However, at the final stretch of the race, Josh Kerr of Great Britain appeared out of nowhere to claim the Gold. Leaving Jakob with the silver medal. That is until he ran the 5000m, Jakob won the race in a very close finish clocking a time of 13:11.31. Ultimately, this year’s Championships did not disappoint and left many desiring even more action. Fans will be forced to wait until the 2024 Paris Olympics begin.
