5……4……3……2……1 Ready, and action! The Cub Broadcast is one of the most electrifying and diverse clubs at the University of Detroit Jesuit. Students that choose to be a part of the broadcast are put in challenging situations that bring out the best in them. Broadcasters can choose between two main roles, anchors and directors. Some are even able to be both at the same time. Anchoring consists of speaking with an attention-grabbing voice as well as making sure that you are loud enough to be heard. A director is not in the spotlight, but they are the glue that holds everything together. Directors make sure the teleprompter is ready to go, videos are uploaded, and most importantly, the stream is on and ready to be viewed.
Club co-president Sean Heinzman believes that the “Opportunity our club presents to kids to simulate a real broadcast environment makes us so unique.” This experience can help kids discover a passion and truly change their life. The Cub Broadcast is not limited to announcements in homeroom. The club has hosted shows as well as interviews with school staff, students, and even pets.
Unlike most clubs at UofD, the Cub Broadcast includes both Academy and High School students. “It is a great opportunity for all grades to get involved in something and have some fun during the school day,” club proctor Mr. Huber remarks. He believes this is what is so special about the broadcast. A large club that is available to a wide range of students helps create relationships that can last throughout one’s entire high school career and beyond. Inclusion is one of the key aspects of UofD’s culture, and the Cub Broadcast truly embraces that with a team environment that is always cheering you on and helping you become the best anchor, director, and person that you can be.
