The Detroit Lions have proven that the hype they received this off-season is no fluke, bolstering an impressive 7-2 record at the mid-way point of the season. This impressive record and their ongoing contention for the NFC title can be attributed to their exceptional teamwork, formidable defense, and strategic coaching. Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator, has shown just how crucial his choice to stay with the team has been. The Lions offense sits at fourth best in the league, often dominating opposing defenses with ease.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the Lion’s defense is why they have done so well. As it stands today, Detroit’s rush defense is first in the league, allowing a league-leading 80.6 rush yards per game. By shutting down opposing running backs, the Lions have been able to control game flow as well as possess the ball much longer than their opponents. Although this may sound like a minor advantage, the Lions have been able to close out games with only 1-3 drives in the second half, not allowing their opponents to move down the field.
A contributing factor to the Lions rush defense has been the promising development of young Defensive Tackle Alim McNeil. McNeil was selected 72nd overall by Detroit in the 2021 NFL draft, and before this season, has been close to a non-factor in Detroit’s defense. In 2022, McNeil was rated a 69.8 on PFFs ranking, placing him at 38 for overall DTS. When asked about his previous years in Detroit Alim was honest, stating, “Last year was up and down for me… I didn’t personally like it. But I didn’t dislike it. This year, I’m looking to be able to be who I want to be on the field. And be able to show everybody what I can really do.” And that is exactly what McNeil has been doing. This season McNeil has broken out, already breaking his previous single-season sack total of 2. With 19 total tackles, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and a 34%-win rate per snap, Alim stands at the top of his field. His measly 69.8 PFF rating has skyrocketed up to 87.9, landing him in the top ten for Defensive tackles. His sudden growth as not only a player but leader has aided in the immersion of a tough Lions defensive front and has played a massive role in the Lions 7-2 start.
