I had the pleasure of eating the beautiful Mexican American Cuisine dine-in restaurant called O.W.L on Woodward. It was a wonderful, homey sensation inside the restaurant as well as the incredible smell that awaits inside. The menu consists of options such as cheeseburgers, French Fries, onion rings along with classic Mexican dishes such as tacos, nachos, or chips and salsa/guacamole. The food is made with such care and love, and you can really taste that.
I ordered a plain and simple cheeseburger with little to no expectations. The cheeseburger consists of a seasoned and grilled beef patty, cooked to perfection, providing a juicy and savory taste. Hugged within a warm and softly toasted bun, the patty is companied with a generous layer of melted American cheese that had added a creamy and savory component to the combination. Complementing the meat and cheese duo are crisp and fresh lettuce leaves, slices of ripe tomatoes, and sour tangy pickles, which enhance the burger with a satisfying crunch and a burst of freshness. The Burger is harmonized by some creamy mayonnaise and a little bit of ketchup contributing to the overall richness and complexity of flavors. The result is a cohesive dish and that of which tastes and has textures which make the cheeseburger a wonderful comfort food, satisfying cravings with each incredible bite.
I also ordered the French Fries as a side to the Cheeseburger. These golden strips of deep-fried potatoes boast a crispy exterior that gives the fries a fluffy and tender interior, creating a wonderful texture. Seasoned with salt and often served with a variety of dipping sauces which I just use ketchup and ranch. These French Fries were the perfect side to help the savory cheeseburger from falling flat and truly an incredible standalone dish.
For the last dish that I had decided to try were the street tacos. Since the day was Saturday December 2nd that meant they were making Birria Tacos. I was familiar with Birria and its tedious process to make, so I was very eager to try it. Birria’s slow-cooked meat, called carne, is infused with a harmonious blend of spices like cumin, cloves, and bay leaves. The tender and flavorful meat is often served in tacos, accompanied by diced onions, fresh cilantro, and a side of consommé, a flavorful broth from the cooking process. This was one of my favorite dishes of all time, and I cannot wait to try it again.
Overall O.W.L was a wonderful experience; I was accompanied by Jack Fritz, and he too thinks “this is the most comfortable and fantastic restaurant that I have been to.” This will be my first ever 10/10 rating given out. Everything I had was just so different and yet I felt so at home. The Birriawas a highlight dish for me, and I will be revisiting that soon. O.W.L needs more recognition not only for its wonderful workers but also for its wonderful food. I highly recommend this wonderful little restaurant.
