How many more is it going to take? Every day in the news, there is a victim of gun violence highlighted. It has become a norm to hear about gun violence on the news. In no shape or form should this be normal in society. The United States government has regularized gun violence across the country. In 2025 alone, there have been 206 school shootings; parents are afraid to have their kids in schools now. Schools are supposed to be a safe environment for learning, but now they have become recipients of mass shootings. Even though school shootings continue to happen, there have been no gun laws created to limit the number of shootings. The United States Government has failed the American people. Students are attending school while having the fear of potentially being victims of the next school shooting. No changes have happened, while there continue to be school shootings almost every day.
There have been gun law protests, yet the government refuses to create any legislation limiting gun accessibility. On September 11th, there was a school shooting in Colorado that received minimal media attention. People lost their lives that day at Evergreen High School, and there was hardly anything said about them. We’ve become so accustomed to school shootings that networks look over students losing their lives. Not only are we losing innocent lives in schools, but we are also losing them in various parks and destinations for leisure activities. Guns have become so accessible to people, which has resulted in the deaths of many.
Personally, my family has been affected by gun violence; my older cousin was murdered in the early 2000s. My family was left devastated, seeing the death of their beloved Shonntaye. What started as just an innocent dispute with a friend led to the death of a person who had much more life to live. We have been seeing young people lose their lives early for many years, yet there have been no changes. As protests continue about gun restrictions, there is a possibility that change can happen soon. Along with the demonstrations, there have also been protests about protecting the 2nd amendment, in which many believe that by adding gun restrictions, their 2nd amendment rights are being infringed upon. My response to those who believe that is to simply look at the news, social media, and various websites to see the families that have been affected by gun violence and how it has changed their lives.
