The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League hosted its inaugural media day on November 5th, 2023. The event was hosted at Bookies Bar & Grille located in downtown Detroit. The event’s purpose was to get to know each team and what their expectations were for the upcoming season. There were three main media groups there. Jason Kidd from State Champs Network was heading the interviews while Petey’s Picks and the University of Detroit Jesuit Media Team. Each of the 9 teams took turns coming up to a well-designed table to be interviewed. Questions from Jason Kidd put coaches on the spot highlighting key players and what their expectations are going into the season. As for the players, Jason asked them about anything from team trips to what their individual goals are for the season. Petey’s Picks came at teams from a different angle. He asked coaches questions about their philosophies and players about coaching changes and their team expectations. Michael Shubeck from the University of Detroit Jesuit’s media team asked many hard-hitting questions that surprised certain kids and coaches. When asked about a heartbreaking loss early in the playoffs last year the newly appointed head coach of the Grosse Point South Blue Devils approached it with nothing but positivity. He explained that he knew it was a tough loss but that it happened and the only thing that the kids can do is learn from it. Cranbrook’s Michael Horton responded perfectly to a question about being a part of a historic program and what pressure that may add. Every question to each team was handled eloquently, and nobody lashed out over a tough question. Overall, the first MIHL media day was a success. Players had a lot of fun being front and center as well as getting to highlight themselves and their team to the whole state of Michigan.
